Shankill Castle (Ferndale Road)
Tower house and later house (private)
Three-storey granite tower house attached to a later dwelling at the foot of the Dublin Mountains, near the site of the archbishops' manor house and medieval borough of Shankill (17 burgages in 1326). Held under the archbishop by the Barnewalls in the 16th-17th centuries, later by the Lawless family; ruinous by 1782 (Austin Cooper). NIAH dates the attached farmhouse 1700-1778. The claim that Archbishop Henry de Loundres built it in 1229 (Wikipedia, citing Turner) is not supported by the SMR, which gives no date. Private.
